MUMBAI: After a long wait of over three years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are set to be held soon, some say in January first half. And the big question on every one’s mind is – Uddhav Thackeray or Devendra Fadnavis, BJP or MVA?

The Supreme Court had directed the state government to complete the process of election of all municipal corporations, municipalities and zilla parishads in the state before January 31. The Mumbai civic body recently published the final ward boundaries in the Maharashtra Government Gazette, restoring the total number of wards to 227. The reservation lottery will be held on 11th November, setting in motion the final stages of preparation.

The last BMC elections were held in 2017. The tenure of the BMC ended on March 7, 2022. Since then, the BMC has been handled by an administrator. While most Mumbaikars are yet indifferent to the mother of all polls in Maharashtra, political analysts are watching with their fingers crossed.

The Shiv Sena officially split in June 2022 when a faction led by Eknath Shinde rebelled against the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The crisis led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and a legal battle over the party’s name and symbol. Shinde eventually got the name and the symbol.

In the 2017 BMC elections, the Shiv Sena won 84 corporators. After the election results were declared, four independent corporators joined Thackeray’s Shiv Sena. After this, the total number of corporators increased to 88. Later, after six MNS corporators joined the Shiv Sena, the number increased to 94. After that, five more Shiv Sena corporators were added to the caste verification and by-elections till the end of the term till 2022. The Shiv Sena’s number of corporators increased to 99. A total of 44 former corporators joined Shinde’s Shiv Sena, while 55 former corporators are now in Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, according to a report by News 18.
