MUMBAI: As BMC elections in Mumbai are less than 10 days away, Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh appealed to voters in Mumbai to prioritise development and governance over identity-based considerations. Emphasising the need for better urban city planning, he said citizens should evaluate candidates on their ability to improve Mumbai’s infrastructure rather than getting distracted by caste or community narratives.

Reacting to recent political statements made in the run-up to the elections, Shaikh pointed out that Mumbai has been governed by the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance for over two decades, yet continues to struggle with persistent civic challenges. He cited severe air pollution, irregular water supply, and deteriorating basic services as issues that demand serious public debate.

Shaikh stressed that the discussion around the mayoral post should centre on competence and vision. According to him, Mumbai needs a mayor who is educated, forward-looking, and capable of addressing long-standing problems affecting the daily lives of residents. “Hindu” and “Marathi” are relative terms… we need a capable and educated Mayor, Shaikh said.
